Obtain a License Plate in Michigan

Eligibility for Michigan License Plates

Vehicle owners must register immediately upon establishing residency in Michigan and apply for a certificate of title through the Secretary of State (MCL § 257.217). Dealers have 21 days from delivery to complete this submission.

  • Residency: Two proofs of Michigan residency, a valid Michigan driver’s license or state ID, and proof of social security number are required. Out-of-state vehicles operated in Michigan for more than 90 consecutive days must also be registered.
  • Vehicle: All motor vehicles and trailers operated on public roads must have valid registration and one rear license plate (MCL § 257.225). Vehicles with a salvage title cannot receive plates until a certified inspector confirms restoration and the Secretary of State issues a restored title.
  • Applicant: The application is submitted by the owner or lessee named on the title. All owners listed on the title must appear in person for transactions at the office, each with valid identification.
  • Plate Categories: Standard, legacy, personalized, university, charitable, and special organizational plates are available to any registrant. Disabled veteran plates require a 50% or higher VA disability rating and honorable discharge (MCL § 257.803f). Former POW, Pearl Harbor survivor, Purple Heart, Gold Star, Blue Star, and Medal of Honor plates have specific service requirements per MCL § 257.803e.

How to Get a License Plate in Michigan?

Michigan does not require safety or emissions inspections for standard registration. The process is conducted through Secretary of State offices, with some transactions available online.

  • To obtain a title and plate for the first time, bring the vehicle title (or manufacturer’s certificate of origin for new vehicles), proof of Michigan No-Fault insurance, your driver’s license or state ID, and payment covering $15 for the title, 6% sales tax, registration tax, and $5 for the plate.
  • Out-of-state vehicles require a foreign title plus proof of prior registration. The Secretary of State may issue a memorandum registration when the lienholder retains the original title.
  • Plates remain with the owner, not the vehicle. Transferring a plate between vehicles you own costs $10 to $15 at the Secretary of State office.
  • Registration tabs expire on the owner’s birthday. One-year and two-year terms are available for passenger vehicles, motorcycles, pickups, and vans.

Renewals can be completed online, by mail, at a self-service kiosk, or in person.

How Much Does a License Plate Cost in Michigan?

Registration fees are calculated from the vehicle’s original MSRP and decrease over the first four years of ownership (MCL § 257.801). The base fee is straightforward; surcharges for electric vehicles and premiums for plate type are where the total amount increases.

  • Passenger vehicles (model year 1984 and newer) pay property tax according to MCL § 257.801(1)(p), starting at approximately 0.5% of MSRP in the first year. The rate decreases to 90% of the initial fee in the second year, 81% in the third year, and stabilizes at about 73% from the fourth year onward. Vehicles prior to 1984 pay by weight: $29 (up to 3,000 pounds) to $95 (9,501 to 10,000 pounds).
  • Motorcycles pay a fixed annual tax of $25. Trailers pay a one-time permanent fee ranging from $75 to $300 depending on unloaded weight.
  • Electric vehicle owners pay an additional 267perrenewal(367 for trucks and buses). Plug-in hybrids add 113(183 for trucks and buses), according to the Secretary of State fee schedule.
  • Standard plates cost $5. Legacy plates cost $55; university and charitable plates cost 35($25 donation plus $10 service); organizational plates cost $25. Military and veteran plates have no plate fee.
  • Title transfer: $15 for submission, plus $15 late fee if not completed within 15 days of sale. A $10 late fee applies to overdue registration renewals (MCL § 257.801(4)).
