Replacement License Plate in Michigan

What is a License Plate Replacement in Michigan?

Replacement in Michigan means ordering a new license plate through the Secretary of State when your current plate is lost, stolen, damaged, or no longer usable. SOS considers replacement a separate transaction from the periodic renewal of plates and tabs, which has its own base fee of $5 and documentation requirements. The Michigan SOS license plate page describes both processes.

  • Conditions for initiation: a plate that is lost or stolen, physically damaged, illegible or faded, issued by another state after the owner moves to Michigan, or outdated according to the state’s mandatory 10-year replacement rule.
  • Michigan assigns a new plate number with each replacement. The old plate is canceled upon issuance of the new one, and SOS advises owners to update employers and parking facilities with the new number.
  • Michigan is a single-plate state (rear only, per MCL § 257.225(1)). Trucks and road tractors place the plate on the front.

When Do You Need to Replace Your Michigan License Plate?

SOS does not set a deadline in days for reporting a lost or damaged plate, but replacement is expected promptly. Driving on a canceled plate can result in fines and vehicle impoundment.

  • A missing plate (lost or fallen off) prompts immediate replacement. Stolen plates have a separate step: the owner must contact the police to have the plate number entered into the Law Enforcement Information Network.
  • SOS recommends reporting a stolen plate to law enforcement, but does not list a police report as a prerequisite for processing the replacement transaction itself. Lost plates do not have a police report requirement.
  • Plates that are rusty, damaged, or illegible should be replaced. SOS also automatically replaces any plate that is at least 10 years old when registration is renewed or transferred.
  • New residents must register immediately after establishing residency in Michigan. The SOS new resident FAQ states that there is no grace period in Michigan law.

How to Get a Replacement License Plate in Michigan

Four channels are available: online, by mail, at a self-service station (renewals only), or at a Secretary of State branch. Preparation is the same for all channels.

  • Have your plate number or current vehicle registration and valid driver’s license ready. If the plate was stolen, file a report with local police before ordering, per the stolen plate instructions on the SOS website.
  • Online: log into SOS online services, select “More Vehicle Online Services,” and follow the prompts for plate replacement. Payment by credit card, debit card, or e-check. SOS issues a temporary vehicle registration you can print immediately; the new plate is mailed.
  • By mail: send a completed plate order form, a check or money order payable to the State of Michigan, and any renewal fees due within 30 days to Michigan Department of State, Internal Services Section, 7064 Crowner Drive, Lansing, MI 48918-8264.
  • In person: visit any SOS branch with your registration or plate number, ID, and payment. Bring the damaged plate for disposal. A new plate, tab, and registration are issued on the spot.
  • Allow 14 business days for plates to arrive by mail.

Can You Replace Michigan License Plate Online?

Yes. The SOS online services portal processes plate replacements for lost, stolen, and damaged plates for most plate types. The portal accepts payment by credit card, debit card, and e-check. Card transactions incur a processing fee.

Once the order is completed, you can print a temporary vehicle registration from your browser. Save it before exiting; SOS displays it only once. The physical plate and tab arrive by mail within 14 business days.

Self-service stations (located statewide at miselfservicestation.com) can also issue replacement plates, but only for vehicles renewing simultaneously.

Owners needing a same-day plate should schedule a visit to any SOS branch, where replacement plates are issued on-site.

Online covers most replacement scenarios. Use office visits only when you need a plate immediately or the portal cannot process your plate type.

How Much is License Plate Replacement in Michigan?

Replacement fees in Michigan are statewide with no county overlays, but they vary by plate type. The SOS plate order and replacement page lists the current schedule.

  • Standard plates (Pure Michigan, Mackinac Bridge, Spectacular Peninsulas): $5 for replacement.
  • University and special fundraising plates cost $10 for replacement. Special organization plates also cost $10.
  • Legendary plates (Black Great Lake State, Blue Great Lakes): replacement fee is $5, though the initial purchase is $55.
  • Military and veteran plates have no replacement or initial issuance fee.
  • Defective plates (peeling, manufacturing defect) are replaced free of charge upon verification by a branch manager.
  • Replacement of the tab (registration sticker) is a separate transaction costing $5, available online or at a branch. Defective tabs are also free.
  • Payment by credit and debit cards at self-service stations and online incurs a processing fee in addition to the plate fee. Payment by e-check through the portal avoids this extra charge.
