What Is License Plate Renewal in Michigan?
Renewing a license plate in Michigan extends the existing vehicle registration and issues a new tab (validation sticker) and registration card. The license plate remains unchanged. The Michigan Secretary of State processes all renewals.
- Registration expires on the vehicle owner’s birthday each year. A two-year renewal option is available for passenger vehicles, motorcycles, pickups, and vans owned or leased by an individual (MCL 257.801).
- Trailers have permanent registration and are not renewed annually. The plate remains valid until the Secretary of State reissues all trailer plates.
- Renewal is not a title transaction. Changing ownership requires a separate title transfer at the Secretary of State’s office, and plate transfer has its own fee schedule.
- Michigan does not require a safety inspection and emissions test to complete the renewal.
When Do You Need To Renew Your Michigan License Plate?
The Secretary of State sends a renewal notice approximately 45 days before the owner’s birthday. The tab and plate renewal page also allows online checking of expiration dates and renewal fees at any time.
- Renewals open six months (180 days) before the expiration date. Vehicles registered to businesses can be renewed up to 45 days before expiration.
- There is no statutory grace period. If the birthday falls on a weekend or state holiday, the owner has until the next business day.
- A $10 late fee applies to each registration renewed after expiration. Renewals postmarked by the deadline are exempt from this (MCL 257.801(4)).
- Besides the late fee, operating with an expired registration can result in a traffic violation and a fine of up to $100 for the first offense according to MCL 257.801.

How Much Is License Plate Renewal in Michigan?
Michigan sets registration fees by statute with no additional county fees, so the Secretary of State’s fee schedule is the total cost. Additional fees for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids added to the ad valorem base significantly exceed the annual amount paid by a gasoline vehicle of the same price.
- Passenger vehicles (model year 1984 and later) pay an ad valorem tax based on the initial manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $36 for vehicles priced up to $6,000, with a $6 increase for each $1,000 of list price. A vehicle with a suggested price of $30,000 pays $178 in the first year. The rate decreases to 90% of the previous year’s amount in the second, third, and fourth years and beyond (Michigan SOS plates and tabs page).
- Motorcycles renew for $25 per year (MCL 257.801(1)(n)).
- Additional electric vehicle fee: $267 per year for passenger EVs weighing up to 8,000 pounds, $367 for heavier trucks and buses. Plug-in hybrids add $113 or $183 respectively.
- The fee for a new plate is $5 when a new plate is issued or replaced. Regulatory fees of $8 are added to certain vehicle classes.
- An optional Recreational Passport costs $15 for a one-year registration or $29 for a two-year registration.
- Late renewal adds a flat $10 fee as described in the timing section above.
